Journalism is a very familiar term in the everyday world. It is a profession that is highly regarded, and extremely broad. It is defined as the activity or profession of writing for newspapers, magazines, or news websites or preparing news to be broadcast. It is such a extensive profession, that has ample opportunities for anyone who is interested. There are so many journalists in an abundance of fields, but there is a huge decline in revenue and jobs due to social media. It's quite daunting to think that this generation that I am apart of, could be the reason the definition of the 'fourth estate' alters. A lot of young adults get their news solely from Facebook, which means that media outlets aren't getting profits from the sale of their work. I just recently wrote an essay on how technological transformation are changing journalism as a whole, and did some extensive research. My introduction went as follows: The conventional term of journalism is altering over time, due to the transformation of media technologies. The way consumers receive their information is indefinitely shifting due to the rise of social media specifically. Now, the media is categorised into two; “old media” and “new media”, both of which do exist, but new media is the more prominent form. “Old media” is constantly changing and adapting to conform with the new norms of society, having to keep up with the transformations. The fourth estate is a familiar term, but due to the advances in technology it is hard to determine the future of the mass media. Which raises questions about the quality of journalism that will be available, let alone the possibility for even further job cuts within the industry.
Journalism for me is incredibly important, with both my father and my sister having experience in the field. I am extremely lucky to have such high standards to reach in my career path. It's going to be a tough industry to get a solid foundation in, due to the issues I've raised; but I am determined to get there no matter how hard I have to work.
